Brazil: 5 involved in murder of journalist Dom Phillips arrested; mastermind is Colombian national, leader of illegal fishing ring, authorities say

"The famous case of the death of British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenous activist Bruno Araújo, which occurred last June in the Brazilian Amazon, has begun to be clarified. According to local authorities, the mastermind is a Colombian citizen who used false documents in that country.

The identity of the accused mastermind of the double homicide, which had wide repercussions worldwide, was disclosed this Saturday, Aug. 6, after an operation in which Brazilian Federal Police agents arrested five people accused of being part of an illegal fishing network in the Amazon and of helping to hide the bodies of the victims.


'The investigation team managed to identify the real identity of the individual known as 'Colombia.' His name is Rubén Darío da Silva Villar, a Colombian citizen who used forged documents, including Brazilian and Peruvian identities, among others,' according to a statement from Federal Police."
