Contracts of journalists considered critical of the government are not renewed by Peruvian public broadcasting network

"Without any explanation, the National Institute of Radio and Television of Peru (IRTP, by its Spanish acronym) decided on Wednesday [June 28, 2023] not to renew the work contracts of journalists Ximena Carrasco and Jorge Ballón.

Ximena Carrasco said to La República newspaper that her contract was about to expire, so the managing editor requested the renewal of her contract because her journalism was not under question.

'When they asked for the renewal, she (Ninoska Chandia, IRTP's president) decided not to do it. I understand, according to what I've been told, that this is due to the Government considering me an inconvenience, so they decided not to renew it,' Carrasco said.

Last April 28, Carrasco asked President Dina Boluarte a question that made her uncomfortable. She asked for her government's response to the recommendation made by the NGO Human Rights Watch to invite experts to assist with the investigation of the social protests that took place at the end of last year and beginning of this year in Peru.

The Peruvian Press Council raised an alarm over the layoff of at least seven journalists and two administrative employees from the IRTP in recent days."
