National Court of Ecuador denies appeal filed by former mayor in case of lawsuit against journalist and councilors for alleged moral damage

“The Specialized Criminal Chamber of the National Court of Justice denied the appeal filed by the former mayor of Loja, Bolívar Castillo, and issued an acquittal that confirmed the innocence of journalist Lenin Paladines.

On Sept.15, 2020, the judge of the Loja Penal Unit, Mario Guerrero, dismissed the lawsuit that Bolívar Castillo filed against the journalist and councilors Pablo Burneo and Ligia Rodríguez for the alleged crime of moral damage. Castillo filed a criminal proceeding and two administrative actions against the communicator and the councilors, on Dec. 24, 2019, after the broadcast of the program Opinión Ciudadana on the Centinela del Sur and la Hechicera stations, which took place ten days before, on Dec. 14, 2019. The councillors, who questioned his management, were interviewed on the radio program."
