Under threat of arrest, Bolivian journalist called by judge to testify

"Under threat of arrest, sports journalist Jaime Vega was ordered by a judge to appear as a witness in a defamation case. The National Press Association (ANP, for its acronym in Spanish), which represents Bolivian newspapers, warned that the legal concept does not apply because the communicator enjoys exceptional measures and is protected by the Printing Law.

A summons order issued by Judge Carlos Alberto Moreira on Sept. 10 warns that 'in case of non-appearance (on Wednesday, Sept. 18), an arrest warrant will be issued' against the journalist.

The action 'is a desire to intimidate journalists critical of the management of football leaders in general,' Vega told the ANP Monitoring Unit."
