Death of two photojournalists at Mexican music festival sparks calls over unsafe work conditions

“Journalists, photographers, and workers gathered on the afternoon of April 6 in Mexico City to demand better working conditions following the tragic deaths of Berenice Giles and Miguel Hernández, who were killed during the first day of the Axe Ceremonia Festival that weekend.

On Saturday, a decorative metal structure fell on the victims, who were unpaid photographers working for the independent outlet Mr. Indie, which specializes in alternative music and festivals.

‘Berenice and Miguel are not a statistic,’ said one of the attendees. ‘All of us—writers, photographers—hold the tool for change. If we don’t demand these conditions, no one will give them to us. If we don’t call out the companies, the promoters, the artists, no one else will.’ ”
