“On Thursday, journalists from the Ni Uno Más Michoacán Collective presented a proposal to the State Congress for reforms to the Penal Code and the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists.
The initiative aims to classify hate speech against journalists, aggravating factors in crimes committed against journalists in the course of their work, and the repeal of the crime of attacks on honor. It also seeks to exclude journalists from being prosecuted for attacks on their own image, a charge that has been used by public figures to intimidate journalists and communicators they find troublesome due to their work.
The initiative, named 'Mauricio’s Law,' was submitted by members of the collective and family members of journalist Mauricio Cruz Solís, who was murdered in Uruapan on October 29, 2024.
'They took Mauricio’s life at 25 years old, silencing him with gunshots moments after he interviewed the mayor, Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez—an interview that was conducted at a time and format set by the mayor himself,' they said.”
