Mexican court rules former president’s daily press conferences stigmatized critical journalists

"Mexico City’s 20th Collegiate Administrative Court ruled unanimously that the 'Who’s Who in the Lies?' segment of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s daily press conferences functioned as a tool top stigmatize critical journalists. The court found public resources were used to discredit and single out journalists as 'liars,' effectively granting the presidency the power to define 'truth' and 'lies' from a political standpoint.

The ruling came after journalist Raymundo Riva Palacio filed an injunction challenging what he described as harassment, retaliation and defamation by López Obrador and the social media director at the federal government's communications office during two press conferences.

The judges said the segment was created without a written mandate or predefined limits, standards or rules. They concluded it amounted to a 'post-truth government propaganda system' that distorted reality and suppressed critical voices in the press."
