"The Supreme Court of Guatemala accepted an amparo (legal appeal) filed by the defense of journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín against an Appeals Court that ordered his pretrial detention, although his release from prison has not been finalized.
In a statement, the Court detailed this Sunday [June 29] that it is 'provisionally' suspending the ruling issued last March by the Third Appeals Chamber of the Judicial Branch, which ordered the journalist's return to preventive detention. However, the Court clarified that the decision to uphold the legal remedy 'was adopted with the sole positive effect of having the challenged Chamber respond to the grievances raised' by the journalist's defense.
For this reason, the decision to keep Zamora Marroquín in prison is once again in the hands of the same Third Appeals Chamber, which has been widely criticized in Guatemala by various sectors for its rulings in high-impact cases."
