Honduran Armed Forces called upon to stop stigmatization against two newspapers

The Honduran Armed Forces have launched at least two public attacks against the media outlet El Heraldo and warned of legal action against it and the newspaper La Prensa. The accusations arose after El Heraldo published reports on internal tensions within the institution and alleged links to U.S. military forces.

On Sept. 8, the Armed Forces published a statement on social media titled “El Heraldo continues its campaign of lies against the FF.AA. [Armed Forces],” in which they accused the newspaper of “misleading the public and defaming” the institution, without refuting or clarifying the information published. On Sept. 10, following an editorial in El Heraldo rejecting the attacks, the Armed Forces issued a new stigmatizing message against that media outlet and against La Prensa, in which they reiterated their discrediting of the newspapers and threatened to take legal action.

In this context, organization Article 19 urgently called on the Armed Forces to refrain from stigmatizing campaigns against the press, particularly El Heraldo and La Prensa.
