"Reporters Without Borders (RSF, for its acronym in French) warns of the acceleration of threats, judicial persecution, and financial strangulation measures against the press under the government of President Nayib Bukele. This repression has already forced dozens of media professionals into exile.
RSF and its partners, the Journalists' Association of El Salvador (APES) and the Salvadoran Association of Participatory Broadcasting (ARPAS), have documented 53 cases of forced exile of Salvadoran journalists in the past six months. APES, one of the country's leading press freedom organizations, was also forced to leave the country in May 2025. 'The journalists were suffocated: first by persecution and the threat of imprisonment, then by financial suffocation,' Sergio Aráuz, president of APES, currently in exile, told RSF."
