"The Chilean Association of Journalists expressed its repudiation of the request by Prosecutor Paulina Díaz, head of High Complexity of the Western Prosecutor's Office, to intercept the telephone records of eleven journalists, a measure that was ultimately rejected by the courts of Justice.
Prosecutor Díaz attempted to access the phones of Francisca Skoknic (La Bot), Gabriela Pizarro (formerly of The Clinic, currently at Ciper), Nicolás Cerpa (formerly of The Clinic), Leslie Ayala (La Tercera), Catalina Olate (Ciper), Benjamín Miranda (Ciper), Francisca Soto (Ciper), Daniel Meza (Ciper), Paulina Toro (Ciper), Macarena Segovia (Ciper), and Nicolás Sepúlveda (formerly of Ciper and currently at Reportea), in order to identify their sources in the context of the so-called Hermosilla case.
In a public statement, the Association said: 'This measure, which sought to access call records, geolocation data and mobile data traffic, constitutes a serious threat to fundamental rights and freedom of the press, violating international commitments and guarantees signed by the State of Chile.'"
