Elon Musk’s Grok appears to bypass Brazilian news paywalls, newspapers say

"In apparent violation of Brazilian law prohibiting the indiscriminate use and distribution of copyrighted journalistic content, Grok —the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by Elon Musk— has been ‘tearing down’ news outlets’ paywalls by delivering full newspaper articles that normally require a subscription to access.

To test how this works in practice, O Globo newspaper tried seven different chatbots in their free versions, using not only its own articles but also subscriber-only content from Folha de S.Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo and Zero Hora. In every attempt, Musk’s chatbot returned the full text of the articles without any changes.

The other six chatbots —ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, DeepSeek and Meta AI— showed mixed performance. Some produced detailed summaries, but none reproduced the content verbatim. Or almost none: on one occasion, DeepSeek reproduced a column by Guga Chacra, published by O Globo."
