Latin American data journalists unpack climate change reporting—from deforestation to drought

Summary

As part of the Knight Center’s “Inside the Newsroom” virtual series, reporters and editors from the region will discuss finding, verifying and interpreting data to cover the climate.

Natural disasters, extreme heat, drought, deforestation, illegal mining and logging.

These are just a few of the topics data journalists are covering to tell the story of climate change in Latin America.

Two new 90-minute roundtables from the Knight Center will take you behind these stories with the data reporters and editors who produced them.

As part of “Inside the Newsroom: How to use data to cover climate change,” leading Latin American journalists will explain how they found and wrangled data to cover climate change reliably and truthfully.

Participants will learn how to find relevant data for covering climate change using AI and open source and open access tools for information gathering. The presenters will demonstrate how to verify data reliability and avoid common errors. Finally, you will discover practical ways to organize, interpret and contextualize this information, making it clear and relevant to the public.
