Chilean journalists were attacked and arrested by police Thursday, Oct. 6, while covering riots that resulted from a student march in Santiago, Chile, reported radio station Uchile.
Journalist Luis Narváez, from the private channel Chilevisión, was detained by police after having claimed they attacked his colleague, cameraman Gonzalo Barahona, according to the site La Cuarta. The arrest was recorded on video (see below).
The Chilean Journalists Union criticized the excessive political violence against accredited members of the press. According to the organization, "such behavior seems designed to prevent the right to information and represents a serious threat to the practice of journalism."
The organization also noted that other journalists were injured by police at the demonstration, including
Nicolás Oyarzún of CNN and Jorge Rodríguez of Megavisión.
Since the the wave of student protests began in Chile, journalists have been physically assaulted and arbitrarily arrested, as well as had their equipment damaged.
