Brazilian blogger critical of local politicians is found dead in his house

Amilton Alexander, a Brazilian blogger known as Mosquito was found dead in his house Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the city of Florianópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina, according to Cangablog.

Alexander was loathed by many local politicians for his criticisms and complaints published on his blog, "Tijoladas do Mosquito."

Initially the case is being treated as a suicide, but police have not ruled out homicide. Alexander was constantly harassed for his criticisms of public figures in Santa Catarina, and he had filed 25 police reports, some for death threats he had received, reported Radio Crickhowell.

According to Terra, the controversial blog posts resulted in more than 30 lawsuits, most for libel and defamation, filed by local business owners and politicians.

Last week, one of the lawsuits forced the blog offline, prompting Alexander to begin sending his messages via his Twitter account.

The state's secretary of Public Safety called for an investigation into the blogger's death, despite the evidence of an apparent suicide, according to the newspaper Catarinense.
