Venezuela to investigate attacks against state-run media journalists

The Venezuelan Public Prosecutor initiated an investigation into the attacks against official media journalists from the National Public Media (SNMP in Spanish), on Thursday, May 24, reported El Universal. The investigation was announced by Attorney General Luisa Ortega Díaz on the Venezuelan National Radio station's Thursday show.

There are at least nine attacks against SNMP journalists, reported Informe 21. The attacks happened during activities of the Chavez opposition electoral candidate, Henrique Capriles, and add up to 64 attacks against members of the Venezuelan press recorded by the Press and Society Institute of Venezuela.

However, most of these attacks and threats were against journalists that criticize the Chavez administration. The National Association of Journalists of Caracas condemned the attacks against SNMP workers on May 24, and said it advocates for the defense of journalism "without making distinctions between political sectors."
