The sons of two Mexican journalists were shot and killed during an armed attack in Chihuhaua City early morning Sunday, news agency EFE reported.
The young men, Alfredo David and Diego Alejandro Páramo González, 20 and 21, were attacked by an armed commando while they drove in their vehicle through a residential neighborhood, news magazine Proceso said.
According to El Universal, the victims were the sons of Martha Nicholson, editor of El Peso de Chihuahua, and David Páramo, a financial journalist in Mexico City.
A few hours after the incident, both state and federal authorities said the crime was not related to Nicholson and Páramo's work as journalists. Proceso added authorities would not say why they have discarded it as a motive.
The killings occur two days after the International World Press Freedom Day, in which several organizations underscored that Mexican journalists currently work under precarious conditions.
A Freedom House report said journalism in Mexico was "not free." According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Mexico also suffers one of the highest indexes of impunity in the continent, has 15 unresolved murders, and self-censorship is on the rise.
