Mexican photogrpaher Alejandro Cossío, of the weekly ZETA in Tijuana, was awarded for his work “Mexico at the Breaking Point,” announced the Ibero-American New Journalism Foundation (FNPI).
Cossío's images — originally published by ZETA and the news agencies Associated Press and EFE — offer a different view of the daily violence in Mexico. In the words of the jury, the photojournalist "presents a disturbing vision that invites us to reflect on the issues from a different point of view."
Cossío explained that his work, though exhausting, requires exposing what happens in a country mired in a never-ending war against the mafias that control the country. "I must be a witness. If I don't show with images what is happening, the people and government will be less aware."
