Omar Rodríguez Saludes, Normando Hernández González and Mijail Bárzaga, who had been arrested in a crackdown on dissidents in March 2003, bring to nine the number of imprisoned journalists released by the Cuban government, reported the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
According to CPJ statistics, 11 journalists who were arrested during the 2003 raid still remain jailed, along with another journalist who had been detained earlier. The Cuban government has announced it will release 52 political prisoners, but the names of those who will be freed next have not been made public.
Meanwhile, dissident Guillermo Fariñas — who went on a 135-day hunger strike to call for the release of Cuba's political prisoners — said he will remain on the island and will continue working as an independent journalist, according to Radio W.
