The Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism (Abraji, by its acronym in Portuguese) and the Voces del Sur network (VDS) launched the report “Sombra 2023: A imprensa latino-americana sob ataque: Violência, impunidade e exílio” (The Latin American press under attack: violence, impunity and exile), which highlights the worrying situation of threats to press freedom in the region, according to a press release from Abraji.
The report highlighted that drug trafficking exerts a great influence on press freedom and promotes an atmosphere of fear and limitations, while impunity in crimes against journalists creates a climate of permissiveness and self-censorship. It was also mentioned that agents of the state are responsible for most of the aggressions against the press, especially through stigmatizing discourse. The document also highlighted the importance of deepening the discussion on the consequences of stigmatizing discourse from a gender perspective.
During the presentation of the report, it was pointed out that the outlook for journalism in 2024 is not positive, given the numerous violations of press freedom faced by the press in the global panorama.
