Brazilian journalism website launches interactive map of school massacres

The Brazilian online site Journalists on the Web has published a virtual interactive map with information about urban massacres -- particularly in schools -- from around the world. The map was launched one day after the April 7 school shooting in Río de Janeiro, in which 12 people died.

The site used Google Maps and is based on information from various media outlets, including the BBC, the newspapers Estado de São Paulo and O Globo, and the website Wikipedia. “This is a format that Journalists on the Web hopes to explore more, in terms of documenting information," Mário Lima Cavalcanti, executive director of the site, said in a statement to the Knight Center.

The map contains information in English and Portuguese. Still in a beta version, users can contribute updates to the map by sending a message to contato@jornalistasdaweb.com.br.
