Cuban regime sentences independent journalist Yeris Curbelo to two years in prison

"On Sept. 24, independent journalist Yeris Curbelo Aguilera was sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Guantanamo [Cuba] for the alleged crime of minor injuries. After the trial, Curbelo was transferred to the Guantanamo Combined Prison, according to Martí Noticias.

His wife, Odalis Legrá Castellanos, told the Center for a Free Cuba that the defense attorney disagreed with the sanction imposed, arguing that evidence of injuries suffered by the journalist was not considered.

The case dates back to incidents that occurred between April and June 2024, when Curbelo and his 16-year-old son were attacked by several individuals. The journalist maintains that these events were orchestrated by the regime to charge him with common crimes. The journalist, a contributor to CubaNet and the Palenque Visión agency, reported on the protests that occurred in Caimanera, Guantánamo, in May 2023."
