In observance of the Aug. 30 International Day of the Disappeared Reporters without Borders announced that there are currently 13 missing journalists in the world, two of which were abducted in Mexico. No official investigation has produced any results.
María Esther Aguilar Cansimbe, journalist for the newspapers Diario de Zamora and Cambio de Michoacán in the southwestern state of Michoacán, Mexico, has been missing since 2009. Marco Antonio López Ortiz, editor of the newspaper Novedades de Acapulco, was last seen in June 2011.
In March 2011, the Knight Center also reported the disappearance of the journalist Noel López Olguín, contributor to several publications in the eastern state of Veracruz. The National Front of the Struggle for Socialism documented more cases of missing journalists in Michoacán: José Antonio García Apac in 2006, Mauricio Estrada Zamora in 2008 and Ramón Ángeles Zalpa in 2010.
The newspaper Cambio de Michoacán reported that there have been 600 cases of missing persons in Michoacán since 2006, according to reports from the National and State Commissions for Human Rights and accusations from victims' families.
In Latin Amerca, there were 62,000 missing persons in Colombia and 189 in Honduras, according to the news agency AFP and the newspaper People Daily.
