Latin American journalists debate violence against press workers at conference in Brazil

By Isabela Fraga

On Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18 and 19, Brazil's National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ in Portuguese) will host the International Conference on Human Rights and Journalism, in the city of Porto Alegre.

There, representatives from journalism unions in Brazil and other Latin American countries will discuss violence against press workers, which increased in Brazil and across the world during 2012.

Along with FENAJ, the Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Journalists and the Regional Office of the International Federation of Journalists for Latin America will also participate in the conference. At the end of the first day, the conference will launch the Memory, Truth and Justice Commission for Brazilian Journalists, which will investigate censorship, killings, disappearances and other forms of violence and restrictions on journalism across the country during the military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985.
