The Supreme Court found six former Navy officers guilty for their involvement in the abduction and execution of journalist Jaime Aldoney on Sept. 12, 1973, the day following the Chilean coup that installed a 17-year military dictatorship, AFP reports.
Five were sentenced to five years in prison with probation and the other received a four-year term with probation, the AFP explains. According to Radio Bío Bío, the officers will have to pay $64,000 to the victim’s family.
Aldoney was kidnapped and executed on a naval based after being tortured. More than 3,000 died or disappeared during the Chilean dictatorship.
