That program has just announced the application period for young journalists and recent journalism college graduates. Applications will be open between Nov. 15, 2018 and Jan. 31, 2019.

“The quality and specialization of the journalists is always taken into account and that they can develop their skills in different departments of the media, not only in positions as reporters or for covering news, but also that they can occupy, with more experimence and knowledge, other positions like editors, directors, administrative managers and other functions,” said Ricardo Trotti, executive director of the IAPA. “The IAPA always bets that these scholarships allow the formation of leaders in the journalistic industry.”

To apply, candidates must be between the ages of 21 and 35 and studying at accredited universities in North and South America. The scholarships include a $20,000 stipend and round-trip travel costs.

A scholarship committee with review the applications in March and the winners will be announced in May, according to IAPA.

Recent recipients are journalists from Peru and Colombia who are studying at Columbia University in New York City and Centennial College in Toronto, Canada, respectively.

The IAPA, which is headquarters in Miami, Florida, is a press advocacy group that counts more than 1,300 publications as members. It defends and promotes freedoms of expression and of the press in the Americas.

“One of the objectives of the IAPA within its mission to defend and promote press freedom has to do with the professionalization of journalists and the constant search for journalistic quality,” Trotti said. “Freedom of the press is defended from various angles, including rigor, precision, investigation, ethics, etc…all values that emerge from the good professional training of journalists, hence the contribution to journalism through offering mechanisms for preparation and training.”
