The Press and Society Institute (IPYS) is offering 15 investigative journalism scholarships to reporters from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The deadline for submissions is Oct. 31, 2011.
The Advanced Course in Investigative Journalism will be made up of three stages. The first is a three-day class in Montevideo, Uruguay. In the second, journalists will investigate their projects over three months with the assistance of an assigned coach. The third and final stage consists of a presentation of the best projects during the 2012 Latin American Conference of Investigative Journalism in Bogotá, Colombia.
The course will feature experts on issues and challenges investigative journalists face, including drug trafficking, money laundering, finance, extractive industries, and security.
The journalists' coaches include Giannina Segnini, investigative editor for the Costa Rican newspaper La Nación; Gerardo Reyes of Univision in the United States; and Ricardo Uceda, director of IPYS.
With support from the Ford Foundation, the scholarship includes transportation, room and board in Montevideo, and three months of support from the coaches. Journalists are responsible for completing their project within the three-month window and publishing it in the media outlet where they work.
To apply for this scholarship, interested journalists must present a proposed investigative journalism project, a biography not exceeding 200 words, and a recent photograph. Click here for more information.
