Guido Manolo Campaña, a sports correspondent for El Universo newspaper, was beaten and held for seven hours while investigating a soccer player's alleged identity theft, his newspaper reports.
Campaña was forced off of an interstate bus in northwestern city of Esmeraldas by four armed individuals, who took him away in another car, Ecuavisa adds.
His captors beat and threatened to kill him, but he eventually went free after an agreement was reached with El Universo, Vistazo explains.
According to EFE, the soccer player in question said he has nothing to hide.
