Journalist in Zacatecas, Mexico, denounces threats from police agents after publishing news report

The Attorney General's Office of the state of Zacatecas, Mexico, opened an investigation into alleged threats against journalist Norma Galarza Flores by members of the Immediate Reaction Forces of Zacatecas (FRIZ, by its Spanish acronym), part of the State Preventive Police.

The threats were allegedly made as a result of an investigation in which the journalist, who is director of the news portal La Cueva del Lobo, accused members of the FRIZ of allegedly participating in the abduction and armed attack on two young men, one of whom died, in the town of Tabasco, according to the newspaper La Jornada.

As part of her reporting, Galarza spoke with family members and witnesses to the event, attended the funeral of the deceased young man and obtained copies of the recordings where the agents are allegedly seen taking the young men into custody. On Nov. 22, the journalist published her article and within two hours, she began to receive threats that she would be beaten. That same day, she filed a complaint with the Special Investigation Unit for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Attention to Journalists of the Attorney General's Office.
