Mexico: Police in the city of Irapuato assault a woman journalist during a protest against femicides

"The organizations Front for Freedom of Expression and Social Protest (FLEPS, by its Spanish acronym), Platform for Peace and Justice in Guanajuato and Women's Communication and Information A.C. (CIMAC) condemned the abuse of force and physical violence by the municipal police of Irapuato, in the state of Guanajuato, towards women journalists and demonstrators. They were protesting at the city council building of that town on May 1, to demand the eradication and justice for cases of femicide and missing persons.

A journalist (whose name is being withheld for security reasons) who was covering the demonstration was the victim of physical attacks by a municipal police officer while making a live broadcast. The reporter said the police woman grabbed her roughly by the neck. When she identified herself as a journalist, the police woman squeezed her harder until she released her. The aggression caused discomfort in the journalist's neck, for which she required medical attention.
