Paraguay legislators accuse government of funding online attacks on press

“Under the protection of Article 18 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a group of opposition figures and dissidents from the Colorado Party […] formally requested  the Attorney General open a criminal investigation into the possible misuse of state funds to finance online disinformation campaigns aimed at attacking the press and political opponents, and promoting partisan interests instead of informing the public.

Lawmakers argue this content constitutes financial harm to the state, since public money is being used for propaganda or smear campaigns.

Media reports found a page called Despierta Paraguay (DPY), used to promote smear campaigns against the press and government critics, and which disseminated paid advertisements through a Colombian agency called Digimarketing SAS.

In Paraguay, the agency's only client is allegedly the national government.”
