Ex-mayor in Honduras receives death threats after being accused of acting as anonymous source for drug trafficking story

The former mayor of Copán Ruinas, a Honduran city on the border with Guatemala, said he has received death threats from drug traffickers who believe he acted as a source for the digital newspaper El Faro in El Salvador, El Faro reported.

On Aug. 14, El Faro published an article headlined The Lords' Border, which describes the drug trafficking activity along the border.

The article cites anonymous sources who held official jobs, including the ex-mayor of a border town that could be alluding to Lisandro Mauricio Arias Avilés, who received the threats.

Reporter Oscar Martínez denied that Arias Avilés was his source.

“Without having anything to do with this, my life and the lives of my family members are at risk," the former politician told El Faro.
