On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the military used tear gas to repress protesters demonstrating against the killings of journalists in Honduras, according to the Associated Press. Soldiers used force to break up the protest by 50 journalists, in the capital of Tegucigalpa, demanding justice for the 24 journalists who have been killed since 2003 -- 17 of those cases have occurred since 2010, according to the news agency EFE.
The soldiers also beat two members of the Committee for Freedom of Expression (C-Libre in Spanish), who were observing the protests, C-Libre reported.
The protest was organized by the group Journalists for Life and Press Freedom, created by female journalists after the killing of radio journalist Luz Marina Paz, who was shot to death Dec. 6 in Tegucigalpa, according to the newspaper La Tribuna.
Honduras is the second-most dangerous country for journalists in the Americas, and the Central American country has the highest homicide rate on the continent, according to Reuters.
