Yoani Sánchez, the dissident author of the blog Generación Y, was honored for her work toward free expression in Cuba by the Denmark-based Center for Political Studies (CEPOS), AFP reports.

Martin Ågerup, the director of CEPOS, said Sánchez showed “amazing courage by expressing her honest and personal opinion of the society she currently lives in.”

Sánchez said that the prize was in recognition of the “civic movement” that has “created cracks in the information monopoly” in Cuba, El Universal adds. The blogger, who also thanked CEPOS for the award on Twitter, said that she will use the $50,000 prize to help support news projects, including a future digital newspaper in Cuba.
