Newspaper owner killed in Brazil's São Paulo state

Journalist Wanderlei dos Reis was shot by three men Saturday night, Oct. 16, inside his home in Ibitinga, São Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reports. He underwent surgery for a serious leg wound and died Sunday morning.

Reis, 42, was the owner of the free newspaper Popular News, which dealt mainly with politics and reported on problems in the city. The Military Police told the press that the attackers entered Reis' home, locked him in a room with another occupant of the house, and beat the two men, Folha da Região reports. He was later shot in the leg. Police had not determined whether the crime was motivated by personal reasons or related to the newspaper's work.
