Peruvian columnist sentenced to two years in prison for defamation

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, a Peruvian journalist was sentenced to two years in prison for defamation, reported the newspaper La Primera. The conviction stems from a column Luis Torres Montero wrote that was a satire about former defense minister Rafael Rey, which La Primera published in April 2010.

Torres said that he will appeal the sentence, which also includes a fine of roughly $55,000, according to El Comercio.

“This is totally unjust; it's political vengeance from Rafael Rey," said the columnist, also known as Malapalabrero (roughly translated as Bad Babbler or Windbag), as quoted by the newspaper La República.
