Peruvian journalist accused of spying for Russia to be released on bail

By Ingrid Bachmann

Vicky Peláez will be placed under house arrest and be forced to wear an electronic monitor, while the other nine suspects arrested for spying for Russia remain in custody, reported Reuters. Bail for the Peruvian journalist was set at $250,000, and she could be released as soon as next week, added El Comercio.

According to a colleague, Peláez has not been fired or suspended from her job as a columnist for the newspaper La Prensa of Nueva York, said RPP.

In her initial appearance before the judge, the journalist pleaded not guilty to accusations of spying and money laundering. Peláez is the only one of the alleged spy ring to be granted bail, as the judge said there was no evidence she had been trained as a spy or used false identification, explained Correo.
