Television host threatened in Ecuador after airing investigation into President Correa's cousin

By Liliana Honorato

An Ecuadorian reporter was allegedly threatened for broadcasting an investigation accusing President Rafael Correa's cousin of irregularities, reported Fundamedios.

Reporter Jeanette Hinostroza, host of the controversial Teleamazonas television program "La Mañana de 24 Horas," did not present the third and final installment of her investigation on Friday, Sept. 14, the day she received the threats, reported the Association of Argentine Journalistic Entities.

According to Fundamedios, the threats were announced over Twitter by the political activist and ex-television host Carlos Vera and the user @gabo_valle_ec, alerting that the reporter's family was also threatened.

"We do not know of any official pronouncement by the authorities. This is not the first time this attitude has been seen," said executive director of Fundamedios, César Ricaurte, reminding President Correa that journalists are human rights defenders, according to the newspaper Hoy. Correa has once again accused the press of going "against him and several high officials in the Regime," the newspaper added.
