”Crowdfunding”, a term used to describe networking, usually via the Internet, to pool money and resources, is starting to take off in Brazil. An explosion of crowdfunding websites, like Catarse, Multidão, Movere and Benfeitoria, are just some to come on the scene.
One project that has attracted attention for its boldness, called Cidades para Pessoas (Cities for People), is bringing the concept of crowdfunding to journalism. Created by the journalist Natália Garcia, the sight has raised about $15,000 from collaborators interested in financing a trip around the world so Garcia can bring back to Brazil clues about how to create a more livable city.
The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas spoke with Garcia, 27, about how she left her job at Editora Abril, Brazil's largest magazine, to create this new venture. Read the complete interview in Portuguese here.
