Peru’s presidential candidates pledge to ensure access to public information

Candidates for Peru’s April 10 election have signed an agreement to guarantee access to public information, promote administrative transparency, and protect freedom of information if they are elected, the RPP radio network reports.

The document, The Lima Principles, was signed at a forum last week that was sponsored by the United Nations Development Program and organized by the Peruvian Press Council.

In his speech, former President Alejandro Toledo recalled that during his previous administration (2001-2006) he issued the Law of Transparency and Access to Public Information in 2002. He urged against mixing politics with political news, the Andina news agency reports.

La Primera newspaper said candidates Keiko Fujimori, Luis Castañeda and Humberto Pinazo didn’t attend the event.
