Outraged by the killing of 22 journalists in Honduras since January 2010, communication workers from this country marched to protest the impunity of crimes against journalists and to demand protection of freedom of expression on Friday, May 25, Day of the Journalist in Honduras, reported the newspaper Proceso.
The Honduras Association of Journalists organized the march that was planned in five cities: San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, Choluteca, Comayagua, El Paraíso, and the capital Tegucigalpa. All of these cities registered killings or threats against journalists.
On Thursday, May 24, the U.S. embassy in Honduras said in a statement that Honduran journalists "sometimes work at great personal risk to give voice to the voiceless” and that regardless of the motives behind the recent killing of the famous radio journalist Alfredo Villatoro, his death this “could lead to greater fear and self-censorship, which is unsustainable in any democracy.”
