Former Haitian President René Préval testified privately on Thursday, March 7, as part of an effort to re-open a criminal investigation into the killing of muckraking journalist Jean Dominique, reported the Associated Press. Ten years after his killing, the case remains unsolved.
Dominique was killed outside the offices of Radio Haiti in Port-au-Prince, the capital, in April 2000. A security guard was also shot dead in the attack, according to a report from Reporters Without Borders (RSF in French).
According to the news agency, Préval and Dominique were friends and opposed the Duvalier and military dictatorships on the island. The journalist was an outspoken critic of the government, police and private businesses in Haiti. In February 2000, the New York-based Haitian radio station Radio Liberté broadcasted death threats against the journalist, according to RSF.
